This painting celebrates the rich culture and enduring spirit of the Garifuna people in Belize. Celebrated on November 19th, Garifuna communities across the country commemorate the historic arrival and settlement of their ancestors on the shores of Dangriga in 1832. Central to the celebration are the rhythmic sounds of traditional Garifuna drums. Accompanying the drums is the energetic and symbolic traditional dance known as Jankunu. Dancers often wearing colourful costumes and masks, move with lively, expressive steps that tell stories of resilience, survival, and cultural pride.
